To answer this question, we had to consider that every era is different, so we looked at select players in the recent past. And only included players who's careers were already concluded, or were already past their "prime".
All NHL draft selections from 1999 to 2017 plotted on this interactive graph reveals some interesting trends. Canadians selected are on decline, Americans fairly steady and Swedish-born players on strong incline.
