October 3, 2020

Below are various charts showing Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAX). Each 'Playoff Total' chart shows the cumulative GSAX, but each round chart shows the 'Adjusted' GSAX which uses the opponents shooting talent to adjust the GSAX. Shooting talent is defined by the team's regular season goals above expected value (data source Evolving-Hockey.com)

--------- Play-in Stats ------

Carey Price saved more than 7 goals above expected in the Montreal Canadiens 4-game play-in with the Pittsburgh Penguins. That's more than twice the performance of the second best goalie.

The statistic - goals saved above expected - is adjusted for the opponent's shooting talent (shooting goals above expected). In the case of the Penguins, they are have strong shooting talent, scoring at a higher rate than expected (0.27; 12th best in the NHL during the regular season)
